Coconut Cream Passion Pie

This is my take on coconut cream pie.  The mango-passionfruit caramels add a extra little bit of tropical flavor to one of my favorite desserts.

Pear Tart

I had just back to LA from Berkeley when my brother came up with the idea to take an intensive cooking class at the local cooking school in Westlake Village.  Little did I know that this cooking class would inspire me eventually become a pastry chef and start Le Bon Garcon.  One of the recipes we learned was a recipe for a pear tart.  It was made with brown butter.  As soon as I tasted it, I fell in love with brown butter forever.

Lemon Meringue Pie

My husband, Brian, loves lemon meringue pie. He told me that it is his favorite dessert, so I had to make him one. I had never made a lemon meringue pie, but I had made a lot of lemon tarts. I looked up a bunch of recipes, but I couldn’t find one that I liked. I ended up cobbling together a few recipes and luckily the result was one of the best lemon meringue pies I’ve tasted.

I normally make this pie with an Italian meringue since Italian meringue is much more stable and will not weep into the lemon curd....

Maple Bourbon Tarte Tatin

This recipe came out of my need to get rid of a case of apples. Brian and I decided to have Ambrosia apples as favors at our wedding. Unfortunately, we ordered almost a full case more than we needed for our guests. After the wedding, we went on our honeymoon carrying around a case of apples.

With almost 70 apples in tow, I decided that I would try to use them up by making a tarte tatin. However, I didn't feel like leaving the house (an AirBnB rental) on my honeymoon, so I made up this...

Alfajores (Shortbread Cookies with Caramel)

I learned this Scottish shortbread recipe from Elaine, the owner of Two Hillside Crescent, when I stayed at her B&B in Edinburgh. Located in a Georgian Townhouse--the room, service and food were unforgettable. One day after hiking in Holyrood Park, Elaine came out with tea and shortbread cookies. The cookies were perfectly crisp and buttery—they hit the spot. Luckily, she was generous enough to share the recipe with me. These cookies are incredible by themselves but even better as alfajores. I’m sure you’ll...

Lemon Upside Down Cake

By Justin Chao

It was my turn to host wine tasting this week.  Brian and I haven’t had  a lot of chances to entertain lately, so we were both excited about it.  We were tasting wine from Santa Barbara County, so I decided to make American food to go with our American wines.  I made a salt-crusted pork roast, macaroni and cheese, and a Meyer lemon upside-down cake.  The pork roast was marinated with soy sauce, shallots, garlic and lemongrass.  I also added some tarragon on top of the roast right before I put it in the salt...
